Sweeping the Hearts of little girls for over 50 years!

Barbie in evening gown

Barbie was created by Elliot Handler, the founder of Mattel, Inc., and his wife Ruth.  Ruth Handler came up with the idea of an adult doll after seeing her own daughter's interest in giving her paper dolls adult roles.  At the time, dolls were fashioned after babies. Barbie was named after the Handlers daughter, Barbara, and was first introduced to the world at the American International Toy Fair in New York in 1959.

After Mattel began advertising their new toy on television, Barbie sales skyrocketed! This prompted the Handlers to add a boyfriend in 1961. Ken is named after their son.  A best friend, Midge, showed up in 1963, and a little sister, Skipper, followed in 1964.
Brief History of Barbie
Many women saw Barbie as providing an alternative to traditional 1950's gender roles. Barbie has been a teacher, an astronaut, a soldier, a veterinarian, a singer, a flight attendant, and a model.  She has been an Olympic Gold Medalist, and even a U.S. Presidential Candidate! She also made sure she kept up with the latest technology and got her first computer in 1985. These are just some of the "jobs" that Barbie has had!
A flood of Barbie related merchandise soon followed, including a car and a Dream House.

Mattels in-house designers provide Barbie with about a hundred new outfits each year, making them one of the largest makers of womens clothes!  Barbie has even had clothing created for her by some of the most famous designers in the world. Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Valentino, Perry Ellis, Oscar de la Renta, and Bob Mackie have all designed clothing for Barbie.

Barbie and related accessories have been sold in more than 140 countries.  Each week, Mattel sells more that 1.5 million dolls, or,two dolls per second! Ninety percent of all American girls in the last 50 years have owned at least one Barbie and dozens of accessories.

Who knew that Barbie would be the top selling toy for more than 50 years!
